My, my, how things have changed. They have for me; how I now perceive things and celebrate that which I once avoided or held at arm's length. Things like the Maroons; the proud people who doubtless made the best of a bad, perhaps, an untenable situation. Nowadays, being dubbed a Cudjoe is no insult; we would all be fierce proud Maroons. In 1655, as part of the Western Design, the British, under Penn and Venables, defeated the Spanish colonists and took control of most of Jamaica. Following the flight of the Spanish, the Africans -whom they had enslaved, were for the most part left behind- joined the Amerindian population (and some others who had previously escaped slavery) in the centre of Jamaica to form the Windward Maroon communities. The area is known as Cockpit Country (naturally formed depressions caused by the weathering of limestone).
