Snowden

Anthony Armstrong Jones, Lord Snowdon? No, not the photographer and former husband of Princess Margaret, but the database administrator, Edward, who is the focus of attention for having disclosed the methods or conduct of the NSA.

Some, the ignorant, have dismissed him for allegedly having claimed that he had "authority" to tap or access records for anyone providing he had identifying characteristics such as an e-mail address. "Authority" has a completely meaning in the IT world. It means access! System Administrators have access and generally to everything. That is why they are System Administrators. Perhaps, he should have used the word "access." but I say that is a distinction without a difference, especially given the path that this matter has taken.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

Meta Data

The use of this expression causes me to smile. Its use displays deceit or, worse, ignorance. What is this meta-data anyway? While the term means data about data, here it is an accumulation of call records which, of course, is data in and of itself. It looks something like the below.

All phone companies have them and they form the basis of phone bills. The calling number -aka phone number- is the account number that identifies the customer; you. The number called identifies your contacts. The difference between connected time and disconnected time is call duration. One need not have an over-active imagination to understand that a caller's habits and whereabouts-patterns are consequently easily discernible.

US officials have defended the practice of gathering telephone and  internet data from private users around the world.
Prism
They say Prism cannot be used to intentionally target any Americans or anyone in the US, and that it is supervised by judges. I know nothing about Prism, but I know a little about prisms. They bend light. So t shed some light on all of this. Oops its bent. But since everything is supervised by federal judges,  I am fully reassured! Yikes!
So much for honesty.

Anything For Armstrong

Orrick III United States District Court Northern District of California 450 Golden Gate Avenue San Francisco, CA 94102   Re: Allen v. City of Oakland, Case No. C00-4599 WHO                 By Surface Mail   Dear Judge Orrick. I am a resident of California who lives in San Diego. Members of my family have lived in San Francisco, California since the 1930s. Most of my family lives in the Bay Area; scattered from Daly City to Hercules.   My brother has had experiences with the Oakland Police Department. His Rastafarian hair operated as a magnet. He moved to San Francisco. My niece no longer lives in Oakland. Her family lives in Oakland. I visit Oakland less often than I used to. My last visit to Oakland was a drive-through, in S...

Telling the new lie was just a matter of time; or as I call it, a matter of transparency

Richard Hylton  <hyltonrichard@gmail.com> Tue, Feb 6, 2018 at 5:29 PM To: Tarryn Mento <tmento@kpbs.org> Cc: CouncilMember Chris Cate <chrisCate@sandiego.gov>, Office of the General Manager <generalmanager@kpbs.org>, Allen Young <AllenY@sandiego.gov> The piece on your website today that featured incoming chief Nisleit, is more of the same. It is not “fake news” but it is “weak news”, and so it is not news. It fails to accurately represent the essential findings of a watered-down report that was prepared by your station’s license holder, San Diego State University.   I daresay that the fine folk from SDSU, despite their inability to understand the nature of data, found much more than what you have stated. The widespread disparities, requiring corrective action as reported by SDSU, went well beyond searches, alone. Indeed, the most massive disparity was in the use of Field Interviews, an item from Nisliet’s wheelhouse. ...

The Prodigal Penguin Finch

Prodigal: adjective 1. wastefully   or   recklessly   extravagant: prodigal   expenditure. 2. giving   or   yielding   profusely;   lavish   (usually   followed   by   of   or   with ): prodigal   of   smiles;   prodigal   with   money. 3. lavishly   abundant;   profuse: nature's   prodigal   resources. The finch is none of those things, the title was used for alliterative effect. On the other hand, I would not be honest if I were not to admit that I have received lavish, abundant and profuse satisfaction in following the bird. And, so, the word stays; as long as the bird stays. Mid-June As is my wont, my mornings are spent doing the same nothing each day. One particular morning in mid-may was no different, coffee then, tea then a visit to each plant to check on its welfare and to water it, if necessary. Then there was a sound; a sound not n...
